What is an infection?
An infection is a process in which the body is violated by bacteria, viruses, fungi or other organisms that attach themselves to cells and multiply. To achieve this, they must overcome and evade the body's natural defences.
How do you stop the spread of infection?
Stopping the spread of infection depends greatly on the infection itself. The following is a list of practices that may reduce or slow the spread of any infections such as colds or flu. These include:
What do employers and employees have to do to prevent infections at work?
It is the responsibility of all in the workplace to take measures to prevent and control the spread of infection. This includes minimising risk and taking precautions to protect themselves and other staff, visitors and individuals from infections. Both employees and employers have a duty of care to each other. Legislation and regulations are in place to ensure a safe environment for those that work there. This includes the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA), the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and the Reporting of Injury, Disease and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR). It is very important that all in the workplace have an understanding of their responsibility to others and these requirements.
What is infection control training?
The prevention of infections is the common primary goal of healthcare workers, regardless of the service they work in. Employers have a duty of care to their workers and need to provide sufficient and suitable training to ensure the risk of infection is minimised. Any infection control training course will focus on causes of infection, methods of preventing infection and the legislation surrounding the safe care and treatment of service users.
