What is dementia?
Dementia is a persistent or chronic disorder of the brain. The word 'dementia' describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. Changes to the brain may often be small to start with, but for anyone with dementia, they can become severe enough to affect daily life. An individual with dementia may also experience changes in behaviour or mood.
What are the causes of dementia?
There are many diseases that may result in dementia. Some of these include Alzheimer's disease, Vascular dementia and Pick's disease. Infections may on rare occasions cause dementia but most develop due to cell damage caused by stroke or an abnormal build-up of protein around the brain cells. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia.
Who gets dementia?
There are currently around 850,000 people in the United Kingdom with dementia. It mainly affects people over the age of 65 with the likelihood of developing it increasing significantly with age. Dementia can however also affect younger people as well. More than 42,000 people in the UK under the age of 65 live with dementia.
